In a new article published on nature.com, CODATA President and GO FAIR co-lead Prof. Barend Mons has declared that it is irresponsible to support research but not data stewardship. 

According to Professor Mons, who teaches at at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, and is a board member of the Leiden Centre of Data Science, huge sums of taxpayer funds are wasted because computer generated research data cannot be reused. This, he writes, is because most published data sets are scattered into ‘supplemental files’ that are often impossible for machines or even humans to find. Professor Mons estimates that implementing policies designed to render data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR)  will require a "large cadre of professionals, about one for every 20 researchers. "
